On February 12, we welcomed 103 families representing 166 adults, 65 children and 40 seniors for a total of 271 people receiving nutritional support. This program is funded through the Rural Food Collections on the last Sunday of each month, as well as through private donations and the generous support of our volunteers.
The volunteer appreciation luncheon gathered over fifty of our dedicated volunteers to celebrate our Rural Food Program’s twenty-five years of service. Each active volunteer received a “Certificate of Gratitude” from Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Santa Rosa. On July 9 there will be a celebration to mark this anniversary year for our clients and on August 15 a special Mass and reception for our entire parish community. Please continue to collect grocery bags with handles, plastic shopping bags for produce and egg cartons. We are looking into biodegradable produce bags and recycleable grocery bags for our clients. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. During this season of preparation for Easter, our churches look stark and simple—no flowers at the altar, no festive banners or decorations. And our liturgies feel different, too. The organ is quiet except to accompany the singing of the assembly. The Gloria, our Sunday song of rejoicing, is not heard except on solemnities, and we will not sing the Alleluia, our joyful acclamation of praise, until the Easter Vigil. “Alleluia cannot always / Be our song while here below,” says an eleventh-century hymn. “Alleluia our transgressions / Make us for a while forego; / For the solemn time is coming / When our tears for sins must flow” (Alleluia dulce carmen, J. M. Neale, trans.).
